Mango Facts

Written by
Rebecca Faulkner, MS, RD

It’s mango season again and I know that many of you are enjoying this mouth-watering, scrumptious fruit. According to Dole Nutrition Facts, green mangoes contain more vitamin C than ripen mangoes. As mango ripens, the amount of vitamin A increases. Vitamin A supports healthy vision as well as healthy bones, skin, teeth, other tissues, and even supports immune function.

Vitamin C also plays an important role in supporting immune function, growth, wound healing and repair of tissues throughout the body.

Another cool fact is that one cup of sliced mangoes provides 3 grams of fiber. That is 12% of the total fiber needed in a single day.

For those of you trying to control your blood sugar, resist the temptation to eat more than one mango in one sitting. Outside of being a nutritious fruit, mangoes are high in carbohydrates, nutrient which turns to sugar. That means if you eat more carbohydrates than your body can handle, your blood sugar will be very high.

Here are some suggestions for individuals trying to control their blood sugar while eating mangoes:

  1. Check your blood sugar before and 2 hours after eating a mango. If it is greater than 180 after two hours of eating, then you need to make an adjustment.

  2. Choose to eat a small mango or share a large mango with a friend.

  3. Eat no more than one small mango in one sitting. Spread them out, throughout the day.
