Virgin Gorda

The dramatically shaped island of Virgin Gorda reminded Christopher Columbus of a reclining woman, so he named it Virgin Gorda, the "Fat Virgin."

Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke has fewer than 200 inhabitants and they are widely known as a welcoming people.

Anegada

The only coral island in the volcanic BVI chain, Anegada is a world apart. The Spanish named it Anegada, the "Drowned Land."

Other Islands

Immigration

A valid passport is required for entry into the BVI.  A visa may also be required for visitors from certain countries.  For more information regarding the necessity of a visa, contact the BVI Tourist Board Office, the nearest British Embassy or the BVI Immigration Department at (284) 494-3471 or (284) 468-3701.

Visitors may be granted entry for up to one month at ports of entry, provided that they possess return (or ongoing) tickets, evidence of support and pre-arranged accommodation for stay.  To stay for longer than a month, visitors must apply for an extension from the Immigration Department in Road Town, Tortola or at the Government Administration Building in Virgin Gorda. 

Pets

An import permit must be issued by the Department of Agriculture for the entry of pets to the BVI.  Contact the BVI Department of Agriculture in advance of your trip.  For mire information call (284) 495-2532

Cruising Permit

A cruising permit is required for cruising in the BVI.  Dive, day charter and sportfishing boats should contact the BVI Custom Department for Cruising Permit requirements.

Fishing Permits

The removal of any marine organism from BVI waters is illegal for non-British Virgin Islanders without a recreational fishing permit.  Contact the Fisheries Division at (284) 494-3429 for more information.

Mooring Buoys

Boats are required to use National Park Trust mooring buoys at designated reed areas and must purchase a Marine Conservation Permit for use.

Buoys are color coded:

   Yellow: Commercial Dive Boats

   White:  Boats with divers

   Orange: Snorkel and day use

   Blue: Dinghy Docks

For more information contact the National Park Trust at (284) 494-3904.  Private buoys on a fee per night basis are provided by Moor Seacure Ltd. at other locations throughout the BVI.

Custom Duties

All imports are subject to varying rates from 5% to 20%.  Imports entering the BVI on a temporary basis will not be subject to duty.

Departure Taxes

  • Air: $15 per person

  • Security: $5 per person

  • Sea: $5 per person

  • Cruise Ship Passengers: $7 per person

  • Hotel Accommodations: 7%

  • Sales Tax:  There is NO Sales Tax.

Medical

An International Vaccination Certificate is not mandatory.  Peebles Hospital has surgical, x-ray and lab facilities. Private x-ray and lab facilities are offered by B&F Medical Complex, Eureka Medical Clinic, Medical Diagnostic Lab, and the Bougainvillea Clinic.  For more information on health services contact the BVI Department of Health at (284) 468-3701.

For Police, Fire or Ambulance dial 999 or 911.  For marine search and rescue in BVI Waters call VHF marine radio Channel 16 or dial 767 from any telephone.
